Some people think healthcare should be free for everyone. Others think that people should pay for their medical costs themselves. Discuss both sides and give your opinion.

‘Health is wealth’ is a proverb that has gained significance in its literal sense. Advancements in healthcare have contributed immensely towards increasing life expectancy as well as improving healthcare facilities worldwide. Various countries across the globe have adopted distinct mechanisms to deal with the monetary aspects of providing healthcare amenities. While some nations provide free medical and healthcare benefits to its citizens, in some countries the costs towards the same are borne by individuals themselves. It my opinion, quintessentially, the onus lies on the government to provide free medical and health related facilities to its citizens.

With the concepts of democracy and welfare state being duly recognized all across the globe, healthcare is one of the most significant and vital areas which is taken care of by the governments of a large number of nations. Moreover, as a parent state, it becomes the responsibility of the government of a nation to cater to the healthcare needs of its citizens. It is also not out of place to mention that since the citizens of a State pay taxes in various forms to its government, they are, therefore, entitled to free healthcare amenities which is one of the most fundamental aspects of leading a decent life as a human being.

In contrast to the aforementioned, certain countries, by virtue of their compulsions like overpopulation, expenses towards defense because of geographical locations, etc are not in a state to provide free medical and healthcare amenities to their citizens. In such a scenario, it becomes the duty of the citizen to shoulder the costs with respect to healthcare, especially the ones who can afford to pay such costs without much difficulty. An alternative method of bearing costs individually, in such countries, can be by availing health insurance in lieu of payment of periodic premiums.

From the aforementioned discussion, it can be opined that primarily the onus of bearing the expenses and costs towards providing healthcare amenities should be the prerogative of the government. However, in exceptional circumstances, as discussed above, the citizens of a state may also shoulder the costs of medical and healthcare facilities individually.
